That deep learning will bring “the discovery of all of physics” is a claim made by Sam Altman of ChatGPT infamy. Whether that be next year, in a “few thousand days”, or longer, Sam-AI-Altman is “confident we’ll get there.”

Now neither Sam-AI-Altman nor I are scientists let alone physicists but you’ll know that physics is:

a science that deals with matter and energy

Gods and mathematicians aside there is not much else than physics.

And as you know science is:

the systematic observation, experimentation, and testing of theories

And dreams aside there is no other way to discover anything you can take back to a King or Queen; a boat trip across the Atlantic is observation[2]. You can posit with words, you can claim with words, but until you’ve experimented, observed, and tested you just have a bunch of words.

Which is what deep learning in the form of ChatGPT is; discovery of a bunch of words[1]. It’s really a bunch of numbers but to be useful we convert words to numbers and then convert those numbers back to words.

In that bunch of words are patterns with meaning; The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Quite a feat of physics if you ask the fox, something that didn’t happen if you ask the dog.

Many scientific papers, full of words, are inside ChatGPT. All of Wikipedia is inside ChatGPT. 65 terabytes of CERN open data from the Large…
